321st MED DET HA — Huey Tribute

Built to remember a unit whose service deserves to be remembered.

This piece was created specifically in honour of the men and women of the 321st Medical Detachment (Helicopter Ambulance) — a small U.S. Army Reserve unit whose contribution reached far beyond its size.

From its home in Utah, the 321st answered the call wherever it was needed. Its history included missions across the United States, Europe and Central America, medical evacuation support and, ultimately, deployment to the Middle East for Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

There, just six Hueys carried an extraordinary responsibility.

Attached in support of the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment, the 321st helped provide medical evacuation coverage for more than 20,000 troops during the advance into Iraq. Its crews flew frontline extraction missions, often operating well forward in support of the fighting force.

But this tribute isn’t only for those who sat in the cockpit or flew into harm’s way.

It’s for the pilots, crew chiefs, flight medics and support personnel who together made those missions possible. Every person had a role. Every person was part of the 321st.

The unit was decommissioned in August 1996, but the history written by the soldiers who served within it did not disappear with it.

This custom steel artwork brings together the UH-1 Huey, medical crosses, American flag and 321ST MED DET HA designation in a design created specifically to recognise that shared history.

For the veterans who served.
